Bespoke Linocut Designs

The process of creating and honing a bespoke linocut design is one of my favourite challenges.

I’ve worked with various brands, creatives, publishers, musicians, charities and individuals to design unique, custom pieces.

Here you can read about how I work and what’s involved in the commission process from start to finish.

How It Works

To start with I will ask you to send me a brief, detailing the most important things you want your design to convey, how and where it will be used, and the timeframe you are working within.

I will ask you to pick out the two or three of my current designs that inspired you to reach out to me. This is so I can get a better feel for the sort of visual forms that resonate most with you.

I will ask you to pay a deposit of 40% of the total fee up front, and the final balance upon receipt of the final set of files.

The Initial Stage

During the first stage of the process, I will begin to work on an initial set of bespoke design concepts for you to respond to. I will send these to you digitally, and ask for your feedback. I’ll attend to any notes you may have, and send you a second set of revised concepts if needed.

We will then work together to evaluate, redesign, revise, tweak and re-tweak your chosen concept, until it evolves into a fully-formed mock-up.

We repeat this back-and-forth process as many times as needed until you are completely happy with the resulting design.

The Final Stages

During the final stage, I will transform your chosen design into a physical linocut print that will be hand-carved and hand-pressed with archival materials in my home studio.

I value the physicality of linocut, and the touch of the artist’s hand is an important part of the design process for me.

Your hand-pressed print will then be scanned to a high resolution and digitally finished, retaining the handmade feel in the quality of the image. This will ensure that the depth of tone and and texture unique to the printmaking process are not lost in the digital translation.

Finally, you will receive a set of high resolution digital files, as well as a unique, physical linocut print of your design that will be sent to you in the post for you to keep forever as a memento.
